2D-BioPAD’s Patient and Public Involvement & Engagement

To better support the design and implementation of the 2D-BioPAD system and clinical pilot studies, the project adopts a patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) strategy to interact with its target audience and receive valuable insights (in the form of consultation) that will guide its user-centred and clinical-oriented implementation.

The PPIE will be deployed in two parts, the first one consists of a series of semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, technology providers (with emphasis on biosensing with 2D materials such as graphene), healthcare professionals (HCPs), health system decision makers, patients and caregivers.

The second part is an online survey, focused more on the end-users of the 2D-BioPAD Point-of-Care (PoC) In-Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) system, to capture higher-level information from a wider European audience, with emphasis on the countries of our 3 clinical centres (in Finland, Germany, and Greece).

Semi-structured interviews

In more detail, our interviews started out with a view to complement existing evidence and the experience of 2D-BioPAD partners in biomarker and PoC IVD research originating following the results of preceding desk research. By actively involving key experts and citizens from the 2D-BioPAD ecosystem, additional insights will be gathered to validate initial assumptions and provide additional knowledge for a more accurate and high-performance design of the envisioned 2D-BioPAD PοC IVD system, but also to introduce major long-term impact to clinical practice in primary healthcare settings such as a reduction in health system costs, faster and earlier diagnosis and progression monitoring, as well as high acceptance rates.

The valuable feedback of the interviewees, which also included members of the 2D-BioPAD Scientific and Industrial Advisory Board, will enable us to identify any dimensions not previously envisaged and fuel the development of a questionnaire to be administered to a broader group of experts and citizens, including HCPs, patients, and caregivers from the 2D-BioPAD clinical centres. This questionnaire will cross-reference findings and reveal disparity points that may require further investigation.

Online Survey

The online survey builds on the structure and aspects addressed in the semi-structured interviews to design a comprehensive questionnaire able to capture at a more high-level the current clinical practice both in primary- and specialized settings, including needs, challenges, barriers, and additional socioeconomic aspects that would hinder or enable the use of the 2D-BioPAD solution. Focus is also given to the potential use of promising PoC IVD, to further inform the clinic-oriented development of the project requirements and solutions.

The target audience of the online survey focuses more on the end-users of the 2D-BioPAD system, namely patients with subjective to mild cognitive impairment, caregivers, specialized/primary healthcare professionals, biomarker experts, decision- and policy makers.

The Online Survey is anonymised, abiding by all European protocols and regulations, and it is conducted via the validated Greenlight Guru Clinical (GGC) platform, under the management of EVNIA ApS.
